Chembongo
African Black Wood

About Jack Mankiewicz

As a boy, he wanted to change the world, only to limit himself at 23 to a seemingly (somewhat) more manageable task:  finding new forms for chess pieces and building a chess game – not just another chess set  however – but figures which the World would acclaim as having the merit to ultimately replace the old Staunton design… (sic).  A challenge open to this very day:  to create a convincing form of a stature, which matches the greatness of the game itself and not only fulfills  all requirements on clarity and functionality, but is a true and universal work of art, aesthetically uplifting, beyond time, traditions and conventions.

Rattelback

The Chembongo is a strange, unusual, and even disturbing object.
Its origin (and age) can only be speculated upon.

Few people have encountered a Chembongo.

Some may intuitively suspect that this strange object, which appears both alien and familiar, conceals a secret.

In fact, its kinetic properties, or—more simply—its behavior, are as baffling as they are fascinating.

The Chembongo’s initial impact is due to its appearance, its shape, and the type of material it is made of. This creates the first, sensory, impression.

The Chembongo presented here come in a rich variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, all of which have the character of abstract sculptures.
